GLP-1 Telehealth for Georgia's Obesity Crisis

Georgia's obesity rate of 33.7% places it among the top 15 states. Rural Southwest Georgia counties (Dougherty, Lee, Terrell) have obesity rates exceeding 40%. Across metro areas like Atlanta, Augusta, Columbus, Savannah, obesity-related conditions including type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease affect hundreds of thousands of Georgia residents every year.

GLP-1 receptor agonists — semaglutide (Ozempic®, Wegovy®) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro®, Zepbound®) — are FDA-approved prescription medications that produce average weight loss of 15–22% of body weight in clinical trials, with proven reductions in cardiovascular event risk. Thanks to Georgia's telehealth law (Georgia Code § 43-34-8), these medications are now accessible from any city or rural county in the state through a licensed online physician.[1][2]

Frequently Asked Questions — GLP-1 in Georgia

Yes. Georgia telehealth law (Georgia Code § 43-34-8) explicitly permits licensed physicians to prescribe medications — including GLP-1 receptor agonists — via telemedicine after a valid patient-physician relationship is established through an online consultation. You do not need to visit a clinic in person.

Georgia has an adult obesity rate of 33.7%, ranking among highest in Southeast in the United States. Cities such as Atlanta, Augusta, Columbus see high rates of obesity-related conditions including type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. GLP-1 medications like semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound) are clinically proven to reduce body weight by 15–22% and improve metabolic health markers.

Georgia-licensed telehealth providers can prescribe all FDA-approved GLP-1 medications, including semaglutide (Ozempic for diabetes, Wegovy for weight loss), tirzepatide (Mounjaro for diabetes, Zepbound for weight loss), and liraglutide (Saxenda for weight loss, Victoza for diabetes). Important Safety Information & References

Black Box Warning: In rodent studies, semaglutide and tirzepatide caused thyroid C-cell tumors. It is unknown whether GLP-1 receptor agonists cause thyroid C-cell tumors, including medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), in humans. These medications are contraindicated in patients with a personal or family history of MTC or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).

Common side effects may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, headache, and injection site reactions. These typically diminish as dosage is gradually escalated.

Serious side effects may include pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, kidney injury, hypoglycemia (with insulin), and allergic reactions. Consult your healthcare provider immediately if you experience severe symptoms.

Contraindications: History of medullary thyroid carcinoma, MEN 2, pancreatitis, pregnancy or breastfeeding, severe gastrointestinal disease. This is not a complete list — always discuss your full medical history with your physician.
